Defense Ministry's State Secretary Edgars Rinkevics and Latvian Employers Confederation's Director General Elina Egle sign an agreement on the establishment of the Support Committee for Latvia's 90th Independence Anniversary Celebrations. Under the agreement, members of the Employers' Confederation will offer material and practical aid for the organization of events marking the 90th anniversary of Latvia's independence.

Dozens of children participate in an event in Riga's Kronvalda Park to make lanterns, from various materrials, which will be lit during the nationwide "Bridges of Light" project, scheduled for August 22. In a tent erected by the design studio "H2E", the children had an opportunity to make lanterns from waffle cones, an environment-friendly material. In the evening of August 22, Latvia's residents will be urged to visit a bridge near their home to light the lanterns, the event will start at 9 p.m.

At the Esplanade in Riga opposite the monument to Latvian writer Rainis, students from the Janis Rozentals School of Art painted on card board furniture. Much interest was also shown from passers-by. Seven students from the Janis Rozentals School of Art painted the card board furniture at a special tent with the logo of Latvia's 90th anniversary of independence. Altogether, 30 pieces of furniture is to be painted - 10 tables and 20 chairs.

President Valdis Zatlers and First Lady Lilita Zatlers organized a reception at Riga Castle on July 9 for the winners of the children's drawing competition. The children's competition was organized by the Society Integration Affairs Secretariat and 100 children between the ages of three to 15 took part. The president received the children as high-ranking foreign guests, because before each child met the president, his or her name, surname and country was called out. Children from the United States, Ireland, Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands and Russia also took part in the event. In the drawings, the children drew the Latvian coat of arms, the Freedom Monument and the sea, but in their essays, the children wrote about what Latvia will be like in 90 years time. When congratulating the children, President Zatlers asked them if they are ready to gift something to Latvia on its birthday? ''If each of us were to give a gift, then there would be two million gifts. We are all Latvians, and these children dedicated their work for Latvia's birthday,'' said Zatlers.

As almost a homemade girft, Latvia received the 24th Song and Dance Festival as a gift for its 90 year anniversary. The festival became the nation's central event during its anniversary year. During the Song and Dance Festival, a special video was made, that unites the logos of the Song and Dance Festival with Latvia's 90th anniversary of independence, according to the Internet web-site of Latvia's 90 year anniversary - www.lv90.lv.

Inflation in Latvia is near its peak, financial experts admit. Also in May, the inflation level continued to increase - consumer prices increased by 17.9%. Residents are changing their spending habits, as they attempt to reduce spending and balance their budgets.

During Latvian Independence Declaration Anniversary Day, Latvian choirs, traditional dance groups and brass orchestras simultaneously performed in culture centers and concert halls all over Latvia a concert called - ''With songs for Latvia''. In the concert program, music from the Song and Dance Festival program was performed.

18 years have gone past since Latvia declared independence. That day - May 4, 1990, Riga was full of people, flowers and red-white-red flags, however, are residents of Riga planning to mark this day this year?
