90 children and young people have been selected to participate in an Independence Day event at the National Theater together with President Valdis Zatlers on November 18. Overall, 515 children and young people participated in the competition. In the first round of the competition, the entries were reviewed by the Latvian Institute in cooperation with the State Youth Initiative Center, President Chancery and the organizers of the events marking the 90th Independence Day jubilee. In the second round, the jury included musicians Aisha and Janis Jubalts, strongman Raimonds Bergmanis and actress Katrina Pasternaka.

A 24-hour 100-meter relay race, an attempt at a Guinness world record attempt dedicated to the 90th Independence Day of Latvia, will take place on October 18. After that, several large-scale events will be organized, where President Valdis Zatlers will also participate. November 14, the feature film "Vieniga Fotografija" (The Only Photograph) will premiere in Riga. November 14 through November 18, the festival "Riga Shine On!" will take place, when various public buildings - museums, theaters, the alley at the Cabinet of Ministers building - will be lit after dark. On the night from November 15 to November 16, only Latvian music will be played at nightclubs all over Latvia. The Independence Day anniversary events will reach their climax on November 18 in Riga.

Clemency Board of the President's Chancery will not consider appeals for mass amnesty, and a limited amnesty on Latvia's 90th Independence Day anniversary will be up to Saeima to decide, as President Valdis Zatlers said after a meeting with representatives from the leading Christian denominations in Latvia.

Visvaldis Pukite, Head of the Latvian Prison Administration, believes that there is no need for amnesty in Latvia, because the crime rate in the country is high enough already. Amnesty could only be granted to juveniles convicted of misdemeanors, said Pukite.

Limited amnesty on the 90th Independence Day anniversary of Latvia would be a gesture of goodwill, believes President Valdis Zatlers. In the near future Zatlers will have a meeting with leaders of the main Christian denominations in Latvia to learn of their opinion regarding a limited amnesty on Latvia's 90th Independence Day.

On the day of celebration of the 90th anniversary of Latvia, military parades will take place in five cities in Latvia. The military orchestra's musical performance in the five cities, together with the expenses for fireworks in Riga, will cost the state over LVL 13,000.
Riga-registered enterprise "Universal Baltic Sound", leading company of reinforcement and sound equipment rent in Baltic States was chosen in a competition as the services provider for the celebration.
Also NATO states standard-bearers will participate in the military parade in honor of the 90th anniversary of Latvia, which will take place in Riga, on the 11. Novembra Krastmala riverside drive by River Daugava, on November 18.

Each resident of Latvia has an opportunity to participate in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record in the cathegory for the most people to take part (run 100 meters) in a relay, which lasts for 24 hours. The campaing in Latvia is called "Run! For Latvia!".
Setting a new Guinness World Record is conceived a a birthday gift to Latvia on the year of its 90th anniversary.
The relay "Run! For Latvia!" will take place for 24 hours - starting from 11 a.m. on October 18 until 11 a.m. on the following day, with participation of several thousands of people. The minimum number of participants needed to break the current record, is 2008 runners.
All people, willing to participate in breaking the World Guinness Record, can register for the run until October 16.

Organizing the speech by President Valdis Zatlers at the Freedom Monument on November 18 Independence Day will cost a total of LVL 25,000; the bulk of the funds, LVL 11,000, will be spent on stage and platform rent. The government is one of the sponsors of the Independence Day events this year.
