16.10.2008

RIGA, Oct 16 (LETA) – Latvia residents are invited to participate in any of the 521 events that will be organized on November 18 all over Latvia and abroad to celebrate the 90th Independence Day anniversary of Latvia.

367 events will take place in regions, 112 in Riga and another 42 abroad, as the State Chancellery Director Gunta Veismane and President Chancery Head Edgars Rinkevics, who are in charge of the organization of these events, told a press conference today.

Together with events before November 18, a total of 954 events will be held to celebrate the 90th Independence Day anniversary, Rinkevics said.

LVL 1.9 million has been allotted for organization of these events. According to Rinkevics, the events celebrating the Independence Day anniversary cost Latvia’s taxpayers less than a lat each. Veismane also pointed out that Latvia’s neighbor countries Estonia and Lithuania, which also mark the 90th Independence Day this year, have each allotted twice as much money for the celebrations.

Rinkevics today told of the most important events that will take place in Latvia until November 18. One of these is a Guinness world record attempt, a 24-hour 100-meter relay race that will be organized next week, it will be followed by several large-scale events in regions, in which President Valdis Zatlers will also participate.

Military parade, Zatlers’ address and other events will be organized in Cesis on November 8, in Liepaja on November 9 and November 15, and in Rezekne on November 16.

November 14, the new feature film “Vieniga fotografija” (The Only Photograph) will premiere, Rinkevics said.

November 14 through November 18, the festival “Riga Shine On!” will take place, when various public buildings – museums, theaters, the alley at the Cabinet of Ministers building – will be lit after dark.

On the night from November 15 to November 16, only Latvian music will be played at nightclubs that join the campaign. Around 300 nightclubs will be invited to participate in the campaign.

The Independence Day anniversary events will reach their climax on November 18 in Riga. The most important November 18 events will also be aired live on the Latvian State Television, Veismane said.
