Latvian Institute presents project "Latvia. Next 90" in regions

RIGA, Aug 14 (LETA) - Latvian Institute (LI) visits regions in Latvia, to present the project "Latvia. Next 90" and encourage young people to participate in it, as LI representative Inese Loce informed LETA.

Today LI will present the project "Latvia. Next 90" in Valmiera (north-central Latvia) to the leaders of the municipality, representatives of schools and non-governmental organizations. The meeting will take place at the Valmiera City Council at 11 a.m..

Business community to be able to become involved in organizing Latvia's 90th anniversary

Latvia's 90th anniversary information tent starts its tour around Latvia this weekend

RIGA, July 29 (LETA) - In preparation for the 90th anniversary of Latvia's independence, the 90th anniversary information tent will start its tour around Latvia on Saturday, August 2.

The tent will the herald of the celebration, providing information about the events, which will take place during the jubilee in November, as well as a platform for miscellaneous entertainment and artistic activities, as LETA was informed by Defense Ministry's Organizational Department.

Basteja Boulevard in Riga to be renamed after Zigfrids Anna Meierovics

RIGA, July 21 (LETA) - The Riga City Council today decided to rename Basteja Boulevard after Latvia's first Foreign Minister Zigfrids Anna Meierovics.

34 Riga City Council members voted for renaming the street.

The Riga City Council's Monument Protection Inspection earlier rejected the proposal by a wide margin. The Riga City Council's City Development Department also objected to renaming the street.

Exhibition dedicated to 90th anniversary of Latvia's Independence Day to open at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in November

RIGA, July 11 (LETA) - In honor of the 90th anniversary of Latvia's Independence Day, a Latvian culture and history exhibition will be opened at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on November 26 this year.

The exhibition will feature photographs, paintings and a video of the National Song and Dance Festival choir performances, as the Latvian Academy of Arts representative Inese Bauge told LETA.

Prime minister and foreign minister thank honorary consuls for their work

RIGA, July 3 (LETA) - Opening the traditional Latvian honorary consuls' meeting today, Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) and Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins (People's Party) thanked the honorary consuls for their work.

The foreign affairs minister said that more than 80 out of the 132 Latvian honorary consuls were taking part in the meeting today, including nine consuls general, which represent the interests of Latvia in more than 40 countries.

U.S. Senate hands in a resolution urging the U.S. president to ask Russia to recognize the occupation of the Baltic countries

RIGA, June 29 (LETA) - U.S. Republican Party Senator Gordon Smith and Democratic Party Senator Richard Durbin have handed in a bipartisan resolution in the Senate for approval, with which Latvia will be congratulated on its November 18 Independence Day.

The resolution invites the president to bring forth an appeal on November 18, which would ask that the Russian government publicly recognize and assume responsibility for the illegal occupation of the Baltic countries, as LETA was informed by "Civic Union's press secretary Dace Balode.

Embassy of Latvia in Iceland holds a concert

RIGA, June 19 (LETA) - Today, Latvian Embassy in Iceland, in cooperation with Latvian Honorary Consul Jon Snorrason is holding a concert as part of Latvia's 90th anniversary's celebration, LETA was informed by the embassy.

First violin of Latvian National Symphony Orchestra Raimonds Ozols and producer and piano player Raimonds Macats will perform in the concert.
