RIGA, Oct 19 (LETA) – About 3845 people participated in a 24-hour 100-meter relay race at the Daugava Stadium in Riga yesterday, as Elina Lazdane from the Defense Ministry informed LETA.
Lazdane said that the exact number of participants in the relay is yet to be calculated, but judging from the data already available, the previous Guinness world record has been beaten by a wide margin because twice as many people participated in the relay in Riga.
RIGA, Oct 16 (LETA) – Latvia residents are invited to participate in any of the 521 events that will be organized on November 18 all over Latvia and abroad to celebrate the 90th Independence Day anniversary of Latvia.
367 events will take place in regions, 112 in Riga and another 42 abroad, as the State Chancellery Director Gunta Veismane and President Chancery Head Edgars Rinkevics, who are in charge of the organization of these events, told a press conference today.
RIGA, Oct 6 (LETA) - From November 14 to January 4, 2009, an exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia, titled "From de facto to de iure", will be open at the Latvian National Museum of Art, in the White Hall. President Valdis Zatlers is the patron of the exhibition.
As LETA was informed by the National Museum of Art Advertising and Information Department head Natlja Sujunsalijeva, the exhibition will present a selection of classical Latvian works depicting the historically significant and complicated period of time when Latvia gained independence.
RIGA, Sept 28 (LETA) - Standard bearers from NATO member states will also take part in the November 18 Independence Day military parade on the Daugava Embankment in Riga, as the Defense Ministry State Secretary Edgars Rinkevics informed LETA.
All the NATO member states have been invited to participate in the parade, and most have already confirmed that they will, Rinkevics said.
RIGA, Sept 3 (LETA) - The Internet portal "Latvians Online", in cooperation with World Federation of Free Latvians (WFFL), organizes a contest "Latvia in 90 Words", as "Latvians Online" Marketing Manager Daina Gross informed LETA.
According to Gross, the aim of the contest is to raise Latvians' national pride and to encourage Latvians all over the worlds to think about the significance that Latvia has for them on a personal level.
RIGA, Aug 28 (LETA) - Today and tomorrow, on August 27, a conference on the history of the Baltic region takes place at the University of Oulu in Finland, during which the Ambassador of Latvia in Finland Einars Semanis will open Latvian artists' caricature exhibition on the history of Latvia.
The exhibition "History of Latvia In Caricatures" has been prepared by the Latvian National Library, in cooperation with the organizers of Latvia's 90th anniversary events, as LETA found out from Foreign Ministry's Information and Public Relations Department.
RIGA, Aug 23 (LETA) - Several thousand residents participated in the "Bridges of Light" event in Riga yesterday evening.
People gathered on not only Akmens (Stone) Bridge but also on the Daugava Embankment. There were many families with children, and President Valdis Zatlers also took part in the event.
RIGA, Aug 21 (LETA) - Today, on the day when Latvia regained its independence in 1991, a symbolic anticipation of the country's 90th anniversary begins. More than 500 jubilee events are going to take place from today through November 18.
In the 90 days before November 18, various events will be held every day, thus everyone will have the chance to participate, as Defense Ministry's Organization department notified LETA.
RIGA, Aug 19 (LETA) - The "Bridges of Light" nationwide event, which will start at 9 p.m. on August 22, will be aired live on the Latvian State Television (LTV) Program 1, LETA learned from the LTV Public Relations Department.
During the "Bridges of Light", lanterns will be lit on all the bridges in Latvia.
RIGA, Aug 14 (LETA) - This weekend, on August 16 and August 17, Riga's visitors and guests are invited to visit Latvia's 90th anniversary information tent at Riga's Dome Square.
This will be the tent's third stop, providing information about the events, which will take place during the jubilee celebrations in November, as well offering miscellaneous entertainment and artistic activities and quizzes, as LETA was informed by Defense Ministry's Organizational Department.
